To explain this concept, I’ve gotta explain something that could end up being very, very important to you…
Depending on the gun that you have, it could have a very specific safety feature.
On some models of guns if something is pressed up against the muzzle, the gun will not fire. This is called the Out of Battery state.
It’s a great safety feature, one that’s saved a lot of people from shooting themselves when they put their guns in their holsters. Especially those with bad trigger control.
This safety feature, ironically, can end up being very unsafe in certain self-defense scenarios (even deadly), and I’m sure that the more self-defense minded among you can instantly see which ones…
Imagine you’re walking down the street, trying to get home after you go to that corner store that’s right beside your house.
It’s dark, so you’re vigilant, watching around every corner and keeping an eye on potential threats.
Then a guy comes up to you… He doesn’t seem threatening, and he’s just asking for directions somewhere.
You start telling him, and then suddenly he draws a knife! He tells you to give him everything you’ve got. Now you don’t rightly want to do that, you’d rather utilize that money you spent on your trusty EDC pistol.
You start drawing, but he notices that immediately and he starts closing the distance, ready to stab you.
Now let’s say your gun catches on your holster, or maybe this guy’s just particularly fast. Either way, for one of any number of other reasons, he’s already right up on you by the time you get your pistol out…
He goes to start stabbing and you go to start shooting.
Now if you have a gun that goes Out of Battery and that muzzle presses up against him in the heat of the moment, your gun won’t fire, and his knife will prevail in that specific scenario…
However, there is a way to avoid the out of battery state! It’s called a Stand-Off device.
It stops the gun from going out of battery by acting as an unmoving barrier between the muzzle and any other objects.
That scenario can end very differently if you have a stand-off device.
Let’s say everything goes the exact same up to the very end…
The end of the gun is pressed up against your attacker, and he’s getting ready to stab you. In that split second you pull the trigger and plant a round right in his gut.

That’s because you had a stand-off device, and it just saved your life…
Now you may be asking, “Alan, where can I get one of these things?!”
That depends on your gun. If you have a Beretta 92 series pistol, you can get one from my shop! The GG-92 Compensator and Stand-Off Device!
For others, you’ll have to do your own research and see if your gun does go out of battery, then you’ll have to find a stand-off device for it.
I hope I’ve set you down a path of deeper understanding of your gun, and a higher likelihood of good outcomes in those life-threatening scenarios we all dread.
Griffith out!
